OHIP may cover certain varicose vein treatments when they are considered medically necessary rather than cosmetic. Coverage eligibility typically depends on symptoms, clinical examination findings, and duplex ultrasound results showing significant venous insufficiency. Patients may require a referral from a physician depending on the consultation type and treatment pathway. Cosmetic spider vein treatments are generally not covered by OHIP.

The cost and treatment plan are based on the diagnosis, which requires a physical examination and an ultrasound to assess vein health.

The ultrasound can be requested beforehand, and if you have OHIP coverage, it will be covered, just like the first evaluation visit. 

The number of sessions varies based on:

• Type of veins (spider, reticular, varicose)

• Treatment method used (liquid vs. foam, guided vs. non-guided)
  Some cases resolve in 1–2 sessions, others may need multiple visits.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive procedure that uses heat energy delivered through a catheter to close diseased veins from the inside. Traditional vein stripping surgery involves surgically removing the vein through incisions. Compared to vein stripping, RFA is typically associated with smaller incisions, less discomfort, faster recovery, and minimal downtime. Most RFA procedures are performed in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia.

Many modern vein treatments are performed as outpatient “walk-in, walk-out” procedures that do not require general anesthesia or overnight hospital stays. These may include Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, foam sclerotherapy, and medical adhesive closure (vein glue). Most patients are able to walk immediately after treatment and return to normal daily activities shortly afterward.

Yes. Most patients can resume normal, non-strenuous activities within 24–48 hours. However, strenuous exercise, hot baths, and heavy lifting should be avoided for several days, as per ESVS guidelines.

Yes. Vbeam laser treatment is commonly used to treat facial spider veins, redness, rosacea-related vascular changes, and small visible blood vessels. The laser targets abnormal blood vessels beneath the skin while minimizing damage to surrounding tissue. Multiple sessions may be recommended depending on the severity and treatment goals.
